During our stay in Florence, me and a couple of other people ended up eating dinner with Ian. Ian has been to Italy many times, so he knows so of the less touristy places to eat and more of the authentic Italian cuisine. I had been wanting to eat somewhere, where the locals eat so I can have a better understanding of the culture here.

We ended up eating at a place called Cibréo Trattoria. This was a place like no other. We found out that the owners and chefs research traditional Tuscan dishes in order to give customers a traditional experience. The menu is erasable because they change up what they offer, every week. On top of it all, they get all of there ingredients from the local market down the street. I was intrigued by the fact that pasta nor pizza were on their menu, because it was not something traditional to the region. This place, has three separate locations, all in the same area. One which is casual, another that is nicer, and a theatre where you can watch and have dinner. However, all of the meals come out the exact same kitchen with one single chef!

Let us think about this chef. He is getting orders from three different places and having to cook completely different meals for all of these people. There is no question that this man is gifted and I am sure that he was put in a situation where he could have developed his talents properly. He must have a passion for what he does if he is going to spend time researching and finding fresh food in the market to cook with. Being able to work in a place where he is constantly being exposed to different dishes gives him the opportunity to continue his growth in development. He is in the perfect places to enhance his talent and continue to grow even throughout adulthood.

According to the reading, “an adult is considered gifted by virtue of the fact that his or her achievement is exceptional compared to others in the domain with similar levels of training and involvement” (Introduction to Gifted Education 283). I like the idea of the chef because there is no question that there are other great chefs out in the world, but to be able to do all of the things that this particular chef is able to do, is EXCEPTIONAL. We can see how even past adolescence and into adulthood, he is continuing to find things that allow him to expand and strengthen his giftedness.

We can only imagine how this mans life may have turned out if he did not have the ability to strengthen his gift. He could just be another average chef because he was not granted with the correct tools to grow in his field of expertise. It is interesting to me and a little disheartening the fact that there are other gifted individuals out in the world, that with the right talent development would be able to excel in their lives as well. However, that is not the case and some people do not have the opportunity to do so, which is depriving them and the world from the amazing things that they have to offer.
